Hurricane and Tropical Storm Tips

When hurricane or tropical storm season arrives, it’s crucial to stay informed and prepared to ensure the safety of yourself, your family, and your property. These powerful storms can bring heavy rainfall, strong winds, and dangerous storm surges, so following basic safety guidelines can make a significant difference.

1. Create an Emergency Plan: Have an evacuation plan ready. Know the route to your local shelter, and decide in advance how you will contact and gather family members in case of an emergency. Create an emergency communication plan with your family before a hurricane.

2. Build a Disaster Supply Kit: Stock up on essential supplies, such as bottled water (enough for at least three days), non-perishable food, flashlights, batteries, medications, a first aid kit, and important documents (birth certificates, insurance papers) in a waterproof container.

3. Secure Your Home: Prepare your home by securing doors and windows with shutters or plywood. Trim trees and secure outdoor items like furniture or toys that could become projectiles in strong winds.

4. Stay Informed: Monitor weather forecasts from trusted sources, like the National Hurricane Center (NHC), for storm updates. Pay attention to warnings and advisories, and act accordingly.

5. Power Up and Stay Connected: Charge your electronic devices ahead of time, and consider purchasing a backup power source, like a portable generator. If you have to evacuate, make sure you have a way to stay in contact with loved ones.

6. Follow Evacuation Orders: If local authorities issue an evacuation order, don’t wait—leave as soon as possible. Staying in a danger zone can put you at serious risk. Know your community’s evacuation plan, possible evacuation routes, and how to sign up for local alerts.

7. Homeowners and Reantal Insurance: Check your insurance coverage, damages caused by flooding are not covered under normal homeowner’s insurance policies.

Taking these steps can help minimize risks during a hurricane or tropical storm, ensuring that you and your family are as safe as possible.
